Milford Teens Tackle Real World Problems

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware’s TLC Youth Advocacy Team is comprised of teens who demonstrate the very best of what our youth can be. The program empowers members to become compassionate advocates for change, equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to make an impact. Together, this group of students from our Greater Milford Club has been working passionately to make a difference in their community.

“I’ve learned that it is really important to speak up and discuss what you’re passionate about. People want to listen to your story and to your ideas. The Youth Advocacy program has given me the chance to be heard” says Elisabeth R.

The Youth Advocacy Team is a powerhouse of inspiration, commitment, and activism. Made up of diverse and forward-thinking young minds, this group has taken charge of their community's welfare by selecting causes close to their hearts. From the growing issue of vaping to the complex challenges of foster care, gun violence, racial discrimination, and mental health, these young advocates are tackling real-world problems head-on. One aspect of their approach to bringing awareness around these causes is their active involvement in town halls. These events serve as platforms to amplify the voices of the youth, raising awareness about the critical issues they've chosen to champion. Here, they are able to connect with local community members including the Mayor of Milford, Chief of Police and members of the local school district.

The Youth Advocacy Team understands that change is not just about words; it's about action. Regularly participating in volunteer events, these young advocates bridge the gap between intention and impact. One notable initiative involves bringing essential supplies to local nursing homes, extending a helping hand to those who often find themselves overlooked. This act of kindness not only provides tangible support to the elderly but also fosters a sense of community and empathy among the young advocates.

Group member Shiane PJ speaks highly of the skills she’s gained through the program. “The program has really taught me to talk and communicate with the community and youth around me.”

This summer the Youth Advocacy Group will travel to Washington D.C. with Boys & Girls Clubs of America. While there, these young changemakers will meet with the leaders of the nation to advocate for the issues and topics that they are passionate about. As champions of change they will use the skills and knowledge they’ve learned in the program to make a difference in communities across the United States.

Our young advocates serve as a beacon of hope, proving that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact. Through their unwavering commitment to causes that matter, active participation in town halls, and dedicated volunteer efforts, these young advocates are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the change-makers of today. As they continue to inspire and uplift their community, the Youth Advocacy Team stands as a testament to the incredible potential of youth when given the platform and support to thrive.
