HOW CAN I HELP?

In just six hours a month, YOU can make a difference in the precious life of a child by becoming a mentor and a positive role model! As part of "Up 2 Us", a national collaboration made possible by the Pillsbury Corporation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware (B&GCD) and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware (BBBSD) have joined an alliance to match caring adults, such as you, with high-risk youth in a safe environment.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

A BBBSD case manager will match you with a youth, between the ages of nine and 12, who shares similar interests. The youth could be a B&GCD member who could benefit from having a mentor or a "ready-to-be-matched" child on the BBBSD waiting list. Then, you will meet with the youth, a parent/guardian and a BBBSD staff member to determine a schedule and activities for the first month. The youth will receive a free one-year membership to either the Clarence Fraim Boys & Girls Club on Union Street near Elsmere or the Greater Newark Boys & Girls Club on Route 40 in Newark. Both Clubs feature an indoor pool, a gymnasium, a games room, a learning center, a computer room and an arts & crafts center. Together, you and the youth can choose the Club where you’ll meet. Once you become a mentor, you have already helped improve the life of a child. Monthly supervised contacts, by a BBBSD case manager, will occur to assure that the relationship is developing. The youth’s progress will be tracked by a program-based outcome evaluation, designed by BBBSD.

HOW OFTEN WILL WE MEET?

Because we know your time is very valuable, we ask that you meet with the youth for only six hours per month during the school year. So, you could meet weekly or biweekly for one to two hours after school or even on Saturdays at the Club. It’s up to you and the youth! During the summer months (June, July and August), one special activity will be planned per month for about two to four hours for all the participants to enjoy.
